| The
history of Malappuram is incomplete if its connection
with the game of football is not mentioned. Football
is everything to the native of Malappuram. The game
of football started at Malappuram from the begining
of the 20 th century. The nature of Malappuram were
in the habit of holding foot care matches in the early
stages. Many skilful and efficient players participated
in the matches. But they were not known outside Malappuram.
Since they did not get efficient encouragement or due
attention and they didnot get needful opportunity or
realm to display their ability in the football. |

| But
the advent of English power in the region, the game
of football got further momentum that had for reaching
effects. The English known as "Vellakkar"
contributes their own share to introduce and to develop
the football in the region. The football matches between
Vellakkar (English) and Nattukar (Native) become common
sights. Gradually the football become popular among
the native. During the period there were a group of
well known efficient and skillful players. Among them
the name of Sarvasra Chickipurath Mohammedkutty, 'Jin'
Moideen Master, Govindan Nambeeshan, Alavi, etc. were
known. The booted English players were afraid of bare-footed
players of native. The prominent football players of
Malappuram become familiar outside from the year 1940
onwards with the commencement of Moidu Memmorial Football
Tournament at Malappuram. |

| The
commencement of Moidu Memmorial Football Tournament
in the year 1938 at Malappuram was a mile stone in the
history of football at Malappuram. It sowed the seed
fot the development of systamatic and organised football
in the region. In the begining og the tournament, only
local teams participated. Moidu Memmorial Football Tournament
was started by Moidu Brothers, members aristrocratic
Kiliyamannil family at Malappuram in the hope of realisation
of the dreams and aspiration of the nature of Malappuram
for the development of football in the region. Various
reputed teams from Kerala and outside Kerala participated
in the Tournament held during the year 1953. The Tournament
was success financially. But unfortunity due to insular
and selfish attittude and conspiary raised from certain
corners resulted in the failure of the Tournament. The
failure of the Tournament was an unexpected blow for
the development of football at Malappuram. |

| The
final play of the Moidu Memmorial Football Tournament
in the beginning year was an important event ever to
be remembered. The final was between Champion Team Kottappady
and Town Team Kunnummal. In the first day of the final,
match was ended in draw. But in the second day Kunnummal
Town Team fielded well known outstanding players of
Kerala by bringing them from the reputed clubs from
Kozhikode. The prominent players, Sunder Raj, Nanu,
Kunhi Kannan Nair, Krishnan, Sunny, Dicrose, Luben etc.
played for Kunnummal Town Team. But Kottappady Town
Team fielded energetic youths of native. Moosa, Aboobacker,
Jaya, Pasha, Alikutty, Chinnakutty, Ayamu were the notable
players of the Kottappady Team. In the second day of
the final match Kottappady Champion Team defeated Kunnummal
Town Team by margin of 3-2 goals. The celebration of
the victory in the final by the Kottappadi Champion
Team was an epoc making event in the minds of the generation
of Malappuram. The songs sung in the celebration of
the victory of Kottappady Champion Team in the final
are still remaining in the minds of the then generation
as ever to the remembered and never to be forgotten. |
