Malappuram
district came into existence by the merger of the contiguous
and under developed areas of the erstwhile Palakkad
and Kozhikode districts on 16 th June 1969. The Nilgiris
and the Arabian sea from the natural boundaries on the
east and west respectively, whereas to the south, it
is bounded by Trissur/Palakkad Districts and to the
North by Kozhikode/Wynad districts. |

The
District has an area of 3632/30 Sq. Km and a population
of 36.29 lacs as per 2001 census. The density of the
population is 1000 persons per sq. Km. The district
is endowed with rich and natural scenic splendour. The
location of the district is 75 degree to 77 degree east
longitude and 10 degree to 12 degree north latitude.
The district consists of three natural divisions viz.,
the lowland, the midland and the high land. Nearly 30
persantage of the area of the district covered by thick
evergreen forests. Mainly four seasons exists in the
district viz., dry season from Deccember to February,
hot season from March to May, the southwest monsoon
from June to September and North east Monsoon from October
to November. The climate is generally hot and humid
with temperature varying from 20 degree to 39 degree
C. The normal annual rainfall is 2907mm. |

The
major rivers of the district are Chaliyar, Kadalundipuzha,
Poorapuzha, Tirupuzha, Thoothapuzha, Bharathapuzha.
The Chaliyar river with a length of 168 Kms is the longest
river in the district with a catchment area of 2434.6
sq. Kms. |

The
district has a forest area of 103417 hectares, i.e.
28.47 percentage of total geographical area. The major
forest area is connentrated in Nilambur and Wandoor
blocks and Melattur in the Western ghats. |

The
district is divided in to six Revenue Taluks viz., Eranad,
Tirur, Ponnani, Perinthalmanna, Nilambur and Tirurangadi.
For rural development the district further divided into
14 blocks with 100 panchayaths. The district also have
5 Muncipalities viz., Malappuram, Manjeri, Perinthalmanna,
Ponnani and Tirur. |

Under
the demarcation by Planning Commission, Kerala comes
under West coast plains and gates. The soil of the district
is essentially of laterite origin with laterite loam
in coastal belt and gradually changing to sandy loam
and pure sand towards seashore. |

Paddy
continues to be as the major food crop. next to paddy,
tapioca forms the cheif food crop in the district. banana
is the major fruit cultivated in the district. Banana
is the major fruit cultivated in the district. Coconut,
Rubber and Arecanut are the important commercial crops.
Cashew, Ginger, Pepper, Pulses are also cultivated here. |

district has fairly good network of Bank Branches with
134 branches of commercial banks, 79 branches of SMGBs,
33 branches of District Co-operative Banks. There are
6 Urban Co-operative Banks too. |
